Knowledge helps avoid interview failures and PSC issues.
Reading a convention in the original is one of the best options for self-preparation for various job interviews or pre-employment tests.
However, the average volume of such conventions and codes is quite large. As all of us know, the devil is hidden in the details. Therefore, reading the entire SOLAS Convention requires a significant amount of time - something that most people usually do not have.

100% preparation “by the book” is one of the best practices, but life rarely gives you such an opportunity - simply to sit down and read it for a long period of time.
Speaking about the SOLAS Convention, there are 15 chapters as of 2026, while before 2024 there were 14 chapters. Progress never stops, and in the future there will definitely be more and more requirements.
Even if you read all 15 chapters, regardless of your position onboard, it does not guarantee success. Different people have different experience and different points of view regarding various professional situations.
One Master may consider that SOLAS Chapter I, Regulation 19 is just “another paper”, while another Master understands that this chapter is one of the key reasons why Port State Control inspections exist.
One Chief Officer may think that SOLAS Chapter II-1 is related only to engineers and shipyards during new-build preparation. Another Chief Officer remembers that Regulation II-1/29 specifies the maximum rudder turning requirements - from 35° on one side to 30° on the other side.
One Second Officer may believe that SOLAS Chapter IV is only about “too many words”. Another Second Officer knows that a Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate or a Passenger Ship Safety Certificate is issued only if the vessel fully complies with the relevant requirements of this chapter.
How do you think - who has more chances to pass an interview and work in a calmer atmosphere onboard?
The main point is that you always have at least two opportunities:
– to rely on your personal “luck parameter” and go blindly to pass tests or an interview,
– or to improve your professional background before such an interview.

If your choice is the “red pill”, you have a good opportunity to increase your professional level by trying to pass tests on the GYRO platform.
It is much easier to make mistakes on a training platform and learn the correct answers to typical interview questions or tests than to lose your opportunity during a real interview.
As you know, the first impression is the lasting impression.

0ur recommendation is to combine GYRO tests with reading the SOLAS Convention.
