Draft Change on Arrival - A Typical Chief Officer Interview Question

During a Chief Officer interview, the following question was asked:

" The vessel is proceeding from Agadir to Burgas. She is loaded to the maximum Summer Tropical draft. No ballast operations are planned. Bunkering is scheduled at Istanbul anchorage."

Will the draft change on arrival if cargo and ballast quantities remain the same?

Let’s break it down.

Why the Draft Will Change

Even if cargo and ballast quantities remain unchanged, the draft may still change due to water density difference.

  • Agadir (open ocean): ~1.025–1.026 t/m³
  • Burgas (Black Sea): ~1.016–1.018 t/m³

Lower water density means the vessel will sink deeper.

Lower density → greater draft.

Therefore, when moving from higher-density ocean water to lower-density Black Sea water, the draft on arrival will increase even if the cargo quantity remains the same.

What a Chief Officer Must Consider

A professional answer should take into account:

  • Density difference between departure and arrival ports
  • Fuel consumption during the voyage
  • Quantity of bunkers taken at the intermediate port
  • Load Line restrictions

Draft is the result of multiple operational factors - not a single parameter.

Do Not Forget About Load Line Zones

The world is divided into seasonal load line zones:

  • Tropical
  • Summer
  • Winter
  • Winter North Atlantic

Before arrival, it is essential to verify:

  • Which load line zone the vessel is in
  • The maximum permissible draft for that zone
  • Whether the actual draft complies with Load Line requirements
